Sleep is an integral part of our lives. There’s no denying that we wouldn’t be able to function well when we don’t get some quality sleep. Sleep does more than giving us a chance to rejuvenate. It’s essential to our mental and physical wellbeing.

It’s evident that we need sleep to flourish both mentally, socially and physically. However, not all mattresses succeed in providing us with the quality of sleep that we desire. It’s because there’s more than just appeal to consider when picking out a bed.

In this review, I’m taking a look at Casper, its construction, firmness feel, cooling effect and edge support. Is it the right one for you? Read on to find out more.

Are in a bit of a hurry? Check out the review summary here.

You Will Love Casper Mattress If

  • You desire to sleep cool: It has a thin breathable cover and a latex-like comfort layer that enhances thermoregulation keeping you cool. The open cell structured foam wicks moisture from the core letting you sleep fresh.
  • You want pressure relief: The comfort top layer and the responsive memory contours to the body curves, creating equal weight distribution and in the process relieve the pressure off these regions. In particular the shoulders, hips, and back.
  • Have back and shoulder problems: The foam contours to the body, relieving pressure off the back and shoulders, speeding up the recovery process. It also offers proper spinal alignment support which is good for the back and shoulders.
  • You love the foam feel: It’s an all foam constructed bedding, which gives a cloud-like, sinking in feeling which most foam lovers will enjoy.
  • You want a medium-firm comfort feel: It has a universal firmness feel. Casper offers medium-firmness which most sleepers will love especially back and side sleepers. Some stomach sleepers may not fancy it.

You Won’t Like Casper Bed If

  • You don’t love the foam feel: It is 10-inch thick foam constructed bedding. Those that love the unique latex or spring comfort feel will not find it ideal.
  • You’re sharing: Casper has weak edge support. If you’re sharing, you may need to get a big sized Casper to be comfortable and sufficiently supported.

The Construction Explained

While reviewing Casper, I got the opportunity to look at its interior, and this is what I found out.

At 10-inches thick, Casper combines four layers of premium foam to offer the best sleeping experience. There has been a growing concern in the sleep industry about the quality of foam being used by the different brands, and the risks that they pose. With Casper, you can relax since it is CertiPUR-US Certified, confirmation that it’s eco-friendly.

The company that produces Casper also has 2 other models: The Wave and The Essential.

Here’s a look at the Casper construction:

The Cover: It’s a soft knit fabric, and a blend of Polyester with firm side handles. The handles make it easy to move the bed around. It has a zip, and you can remove the cover for cleaning. You’ll wash it at 40 degrees. The zip also makes returning it a simple task.

It gives a soft feel, enhancing the quality of comfort that you receive. It’s also thin; giving it excellent breathability and lets you feel the pressure relieving properties and relaxation from the top layers.

The Open Cell Top Layer: It is latex-like foam with an open cell structure giving it excellent breathability. I slept cool thanks to this latex-like layer. It offers some bounce; you’ll slightly sink in and experience pressure relief.

Responsive Memory Foam Layer: Memory does an excellent job of contouring to the body curves creating equal weight distribution, giving pressure relief. It adds to the amount of comfort you receive.

Adaptive Transition Foam Layer: It has a zoned support design providing a soft surface for the shoulders and firm support for the hip regions. It’s high-density polyfoam that adds to the durability and stability of the structure.

Durable Support Foam Layer: This is the base and support layer of Casper. It’s high density, firm and therefore provides the required support. Like the transition layer, it also adds to durability and stability of the structure. It ensures that you get the right amount of support.

Note however that the Casper construction slightly varies. The UK layers are different from those of Canada and the USA. I loved the support and comfort that I received giving it a 9.5/10 rating. Similarly, materials and quality also rate at 9.5/10.

The Firmness

From doing several reviews, I got to realize that firmness is felt differently, depending on our weight and body shape. In fact, if you’re heavier, above 250/300lbs, there are specific brands in the industry which will be more suitable.

The Casper – Is 6/10 on our firmness scale.

The Casper has a universal comfort feel, and rates at 6/10. That’s a medium-firm comfort feel, which the majority of sleepers will find comfortable. The zoned transition layer gives firmer support feel for the hip regions and gets softer in the shoulder regions. Side and back sleepers will love Casper more. I was quite cozy in both positions. A section of stomach sleepers will enjoy sleeping on it, but some will find the support to be insufficient.

The Wave – Is 8/10 on our firmness scale.

The Essential – Is 4.5/10 on our firmness scale.

The Wave and The Essential are the other models under The Casper brand – it has something for all categories of sleepers. They have a firm, medium-firm and soft mattress. The Wave is Firm and has a rating of 8/10. The Essential on the other hand is soft and has a firmness rating of 4.5/10.

Whether you sleep on your back, side or stomach, they have a bed for you.

Sleeping Cool (Temperature Analysis)

Traditionally, foam performs poorly when it comes to cooling efficiency. Having reviewed several foam beds, I know for a fact that it’s been a challenge but some companies have succeeded in solving the issue, Casper being one of them.

For all foam, it rates at 9.1/10, which is very impressive. The breathable cover and the open-cell top layer do an excellent job of keeping you cool. The heat from the memory layer is wicked away by the top layer. Other than the top layer, the different layers are made airy to encourage airflow and therefore keep you fresh.

Edge Support

Reviews have shown that foam mattresses also fall short on edge support. Casper rates at 8.5/10, which to me is its lowest performing feature. Although I didn’t fall, I didn’t get as much comfort as I did at the center of the bed.

At the center, there’s firm support, but as you move towards the sides, it gets weaker. Many foam brands have this problem. It makes it difficult to utilize the entire surface, which also affects sharing the bed.

If you sleep with a partner, you may want to get a bigger size mattress that will comfortably fit the both of you without the risk of you falling over while sleeping.

It’s suitable for sharing because motion transfer is significantly limited. It scores a 9.1/10 on motion transfer. The majority of foam performs well on this aspect.

The Casper is one of the few foam beds available on the market today that sleep cool. The 10-inch thick bedding combines four different layers of foam each designed to serve a specific purpose. The top layer is an open cell breathable foam that keeps you cool, and below it is a memory foam layer that provides pressure relief. The transition and base layers offer both comfort and support.

It’s a medium-firm mattress, which the majority will find suitable. Those sharing will love it because motion transfer is significantly limited. However, the edge support is insufficient, and they may have to get a bigger bed.
