Our Thoughts on the New Spindle Mattress (Grab Your Promo Code)

A lot of the reviews that I’ve done have been on spring and memory foam beds. Rarely will you come across “all natural, all latex” mattresses. When I finally came across the New Spindle Bed, you can imagine my excitement! And I am almost certain latex lovers are too. If you’re a foam or spring person, this may not be for you. However, read on because you just may want to give it a try.

The new Spindle is a natural latex mattress manufactured in New England, the United States that comes in four varieties. They are soft, medium, firm and extra firm comfort/support levels. They are available online and come at quite affordable prices, for an all-natural latex bed that is.

If you’re in a rush or just want my final thoughts, you can find a summary of the review here.

Why You Will Really Like the Spindle Bed…

  • It can accommodate the different sleeping positions: Since the mattress comes in three parts each with a different firmness level, you can adjust it to fit the level of firmness that can comfortably accommodate your sleeping position.
  • There’s no off-gassing: Considering how the use of foam has raised environmental and health concerns over the years, it is free of such toxins. In particular, one of the primary reasons why people are shying away from using foam is off-gassing, which is dangerous to both our wellbeing and the environment. With natural latex, you don’t have to worry about off-gassing.
  • It’s natural latex: As mentioned, Spindle is purely latex, therefore, if you’re into latex, then this is among the best options available in the market.
  • It’s durable: Tired of getting a new mattress now and then? Then consider getting Spindle. Latex can last for more years as compared to foam.
  • You’ll sleep cool: You’ll sleep cooler on Latex foam compared to the traditional or gel foam. It’s more breathable plus they have included natural wool batting which keeps you warm during winter and absorbs moisture in summer to keep you cool.
  • It’s quite priced friendly: Spindle is cheap, cheap being relative. This is because when compared to foam mattresses, it’s pretty expensive, but to other latex varieties, it is pretty cheap. Ordinarily, a twin latex goes for anything between $1800 and $2000. Spindle, on the other hand, goes for $899, that’s a $1000 less than other latex brands.
  • Adjustable comfort level: Spindle mattress comes in three layers of different firmness levels, this gives you the ability to adjust the mattress’ level of firmness.
  • It can comfortably support a heavy person: I found the core support for the latex to be stronger than that of the foam and therefore would comfortably support a heavier sleeper. It’s worth noting that it can only support individuals with up to a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 31.

You May Not Like Spindle Mattress…

  • If you’re not a latex person: Latex foam has a different feel when compared to traditional or memory foam. Therefore, it may not be good for you if you don’t like the latex foam feel.
  • It requires assembly: When you order Spindle, it will come in three different boxes with instructions on how to assemble it. I found assembling it on my own a bit challenging, especially when it came to ensuring that the edges are aligned. Assemble when you are two, it will be much easier. However, it’s not that hard or time-consuming even when you’re doing it alone.
  • If you want edge support: Spindle doesn’t score well on edge support. I had trouble maximizing the entire mattress surface. This means sharing the bed or sitting at the edge may be a problem since the chances are that you’ll likely roll over when the edge compresses.

What Are the Construction of Layers Like?

What the Mattress is Made Out Of

The mattress is designed to offer better performance than foam products. The tech applied in manufacturing this product is unique and advanced; convincing me that Spindle achieved their objective. I rated the materials and quality at 9.3 out of 10, as illustrated below:

The Cover: It’s made from organic cotton and high quality wool. The high absorbent qualities of cotton ensure that no sweat accumulates on you during the hot nights. Knit in South Carolina, it is very beautiful, and while I was reviewing it, I liked how soft it feels to the skin. The wool batting on the top side gives fire deterrence properties without the use of toxic compounds and acts as a moisture barrier for extra breathability and thermoregulation.

The Natural Latex Layers: Comprising of three layers, all organic natural latex, it comes in two densities setting of 4.6 (medium) and 5.6 (firm) PCF to achieve the four firmness levels; soft, medium, firm, and extra firm. When you place your order, you will be supplied with three latex layers that you will assemble into the cover accordingly. For soft firmness, you’ll get three medium layers; medium firmness you’ll get two medium and one firm; the firm level is achieved by two firm layers and one medium; the extra firm is made by all firm layers. When arranging the layer, it is recommended that you place firm layers first. The medium, however, you can still flip the layers around to get desired firmness.

What is the Firmness Rating?

Spindle offers four different firmness levels. I have discussed, reviewed and rated each below:

Soft – Is 4.5/10 on our firmness scale.

Because of how latex behaves, the soft isn’t as soft as you imagine it to be. The more weight and time you apply on the bed, the firmer it gets. It’s quite different from traditional foam. In fact, if you’re thinking of getting a bed that’s fluffy, Spindle soft or any other latex bed for that matter may not work for you. However, it’s worth noting that it contours perfectly to your body offering excellent support/comfort. It works well for back or side sleepers.

Medium – Is 5.5/10 on our firmness scale.

Just as the name suggests, it offers a medium level of firmness. It’s also good for back and side sleeping.

Firm – Is 6.5/10 on our firmness scale.

Works well for stomach and back sleepers. The top layer has medium firmness. However, it’s more towards the firm side. 6.5 rating is the most preferred firmness rating most people buy.

Extra Firm – Is 8/10 on our firmness scale.

It’s not as firm either. The extra is just in the name, although it has three layers each with three inches of firmness. However, it’s quite firm and will comfortably support your body and contour to its shape. Perfect for the back (especially if you weigh more) or stomach sleeping.

About Motion Transfer

Organic Cotton Top

Latex, just like conventional foam, has little motion transfer scoring an 8.8/10. When I reviewed the Spindle mattress, I found it to be bouncy but doesn’t sink in as much as memory foam. When someone sleeps or sits on Spindle while you’re sleeping, you’ll feel some slight motion unless it’s the King size.

Edge Support

I gave Spindle 8.3/10 and here’s why…

When I sat at the edge, there was considerable sinkage. If you’re looking for a bed that will offer firm support at the edges as you sleep and sit, then it may not be a good choice. There was compression at the edges and especially the corners.

Extra Considerations

  • Natural Latex: Spindle beds are 100% pure latex that’s natural, with the exception of the cover which is also pure cotton with natural wool batting. If you’ve never slept on latex, I suggest trying it out first. Latex isn’t for everyone.
  • Manufacturer: They are manufactured in New England, USA.
  • Shipping: Ships for free in the USA, straight to your doorstep. There are other shipping exceptions available on their website, check them out to confirm if you’re on the free shipping list or not.
  • Warranty: They have a 10-year limit warranty.
  • Comfort Life: Comfort life is a 25-year program that offers Spindle customers 30% off the current pricing on products. For example, you can buy a latex layer to modify your bed feels for less the price it will be going for.
  • Certification: The latex they use is Oeko-Tex 100, Class I certified.
  • Trial Period: Spindle offers a 120 night trial period. However, it’s NOT risk-free.
  • Foundation: Spindle mattress will work well on any solid surface; floor, wood, slats, box spring, or adjustable base.

Spindle Beds are natural latex mattresses that are manufactured in New England, USA. They come in four varieties; Soft, Medium, Firm and Extra Firm; and are available in six sizes. When I was reviewing, I found the latex foam to be breathable, so it keeps you cool. It’s also supportive and offers sufficient comfort even to heavy persons. At 10-inches thick, it will provide more support and comfort when compared to other conventional foam beds.

The cover is designed with pure natural cotton that has a soft and comfortable feel which also helps you to keep cool. The wool batting enhances comfort and at the same time wicks moisture away keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. It has three layers with different firmness level that you can adjust to fit your sleeping style.
