Review of Avatar Mattress (What We Found Out)

I love latex simply because it offers comfort and sleeps cool; combine that with gel-infused memory foam, and it takes your sleeping experience to a whole new level. Memory foam with gel infusion contours to the body curves and gives pressure relief.

In this review, we take a look at one of my favorite options, the Avatar mattress. It’s a mix of latex and foam, designed to provide you with quality sleep. Latex tends to have a unique feel, which I found that most people, in particular, those who’ve never slept on latex, may find it ‘weird’ at first, but after a while, you’ll get to enjoy it.

At the end of the read, you will have figured out if it’s the ideal bed for you.

Avatar Mattress Was Invented For

  • Sleeping cool: Hot sleepers will love Avatar because it sleeps very cool. There are a couple of features that have been incorporated into its design to enhance thermoregulation. It includes a Tencel fabric cover, natural latex and the gel infused memory foam.
  • Those sharing: It has a strong edge support system which makes it suitable for utilizing the entire bed surface. Motion transfer is also significantly limited; therefore, your partners’ movements on the bed will not stop you from enjoying quality sleep.
  • Side and back sleepers: Avatar gives a medium-firm comfort feel, the universal preferred firmness feel by the majority of sleepers. I found that back and side sleepers get to sleep comfortably and supported. A section of stomach sleepers will find it to offer some discomfort.
  • Pressure relief: The memory foam and latex layers do an excellent job of contouring to the body curves, this relieves the pressure off this regions. The top latex layer is fast responsive and gives the bounce, adjusting as you change positions to prevent any discomfort.
  • Foam lovers: It’s 30cm thick, that’s approximately 11-inches of 3 different layers of foam. The latex top layer gives the bounce while the memory contours to your body. The base layer provides support. The three layers give the cloud-like comfort feel but without the sink, as the latex is responsive keeping you on the surface.

Avatar Bed Was Not Invented For

  • Spring lovers: It is foam constructed so those in search of the bounce experienced on spring may find it uncomfortable.
  • Stomach sleepers: Not all stomach sleepers fancy sleeping on Avatar. It may be too firm for them.

Structure and Layers (Our Analysis & Overview)

Inside the Mattress Inspected

While reviewing the Avatar, I got to remove the cover, look at its structure and the layers. It’s among the most critical aspects of a mattress. The best brands have utilized only the best materials and design to ensure that you enjoy high quality sleep. A good sleeping surface is just as good as the materials used.

Let’s take a look at the Avatar construction and design:

I rate the materials and quality at 9.0/10. It’s because I was quite impressed with what I found out.

The Cover: It’s appealing with a white Tencel® quilting top, grey linen sides with non-slip beads at the bottom. The Tencel® quilting fabric will absorb moisture from the body and surrounding areas as its ‘ultra-absorbent.’ It’s also soft to touch, giving you a cozy sleeping surface.

The grey side panels are constructed using linen fabric that allows for ventilation. The ventilation is good for enhanced airflow keeping the mattress core cool and fresh. The bottom side is fitted with no-slip beads to prevent the bedding from moving out of place.

The Natural Latex Top Layer: From my reviews, I’ve noted that the distinction between natural and synthetic latex is a crucial aspect. It’s because natural latex is hypoallergic, and sleeps cooler. The latex padding on Avatar is natural and has pinholes making it the best for heat regulation. The pin holes give ventilation.

Its hypoallergic nature makes it suitable for persons with allergies as it keeps microbes and dust mites away. The latex also molds to the body creating pressures relief for the neck, shoulders, back and hip regions.

It’s important to note that not everyone is used to the latex feel. If you’ve never slept on it, ensure that you give it a trial run first. I found that those not used to it may find it slightly uncomfortable.

Gel-infused Memory Foam Layer: Similar to the latex top layer, it contours to your body shape, creating equal weight distribution which in turn gives pressure relief. It’s because of memory foams viscoelastic nature.

However, memory foam has the disadvantage of sleeping hot. To solve the problem, it’s infused with gel particles that will absorb the heat keeping you cool.

‘State of the Art’ High-Density Support Foam: It constitutes the thick base layer of Avatar. To offer the much-needed support, it’s high density. It not only supports your weight but also that of top comfort layers. It adds to the durability and stability of the structure.

I had a pleasant sleeping experience on Avatar, rating the support and comfort provided at 9.2/10.

Let’s Look at the Firmness Test

Avatar – Is 6/10 on our firmness scale.

I got some friends to give their opinion of firmness feel for purposes of the review. On average, we found that it has a medium-firm comfort feel of 6/10. It’s the universally desired firmness rating.

It’s worth noting that we tend to feel firmness differently. It depends on our body weight and size. Side and back sleepers are going to enjoy sleeping on Avatar. Although it’s suitable for sleeping in different postures, a group of stomach sleepers will be uncomfortable.

Latex is responsive, giving bounce and ensuring you stay on rather than in the mattress.

Cooling Rating

Avatar scores a 9.0/10 for cooling effect. I slept cool and fresh all night long. The overall material construction and design of this bedding ensure that you stay cool.

The cover fabric is Tencel and linen constructed that will absorb the moisture and improve the ventilation encouraging airflow. Natural latex is known for staying cool, while the pin holes also improve the beds ventilation system.

Edge Support

Reviewing the Edge of the Surface

From doing several reviews, I found that the majority of foam mattresses tend to fall short when it comes to edge support. However, many brands have invested in advancing the edge support of their beds, and Avatar is one of them.

For those planning to use the entire bed surface, it’s an excellent choice as I rate edge support at 9.0/10. For most foam mattresses, you’ll find that as you move towards the sides of the bed, the support starts to weaken. This is a problem especially for those sleeping with a partner. Avatar is different. You’ll comfortably rest on the sides without the risk of you falling.

The other reason that makes it suitable for those sharing is that motion transfer is significantly limited. I give it a 9.2/10. That means you won’t lose out on quality sleep because of your partner’s movements while sleeping.

Avatar is a 30cm thick mattress with three layers made of natural latex; gel infused memory and support foam. They give a universal comfort feel which a majority of individuals, I being one of them love. Side and back sleepers will find it suitable, including those who sleep in multiple positions. Only a section of stomach sleepers will find the Avatar ideal.

It’s available across Australia, and they ship for free straight to your doorstep. It has a Tencel fabric cover which is very absorbent and will wick the moisture away from the body as you sleep. Natural latex together with the gel infused memory foam also enhance thermoregulation making it perfect for hot sleepers.

I also recommend it for those sleeping with a partner; it has excellent edge support and significantly limited motion transfer.
